I was looking through my closet and doing a little inventory and clean out when I got to thinking about my winter closet staples. It can be hard to know where to invest and what to prioritize when making winter purchases, so I wanted to round up 15 of my winter closet staples for you all today. These are the pieces I would buy first and then when updating my closet that I would want to invest in. They will always be in style and are the ones that you’ll wear time and time again.

A MOTO JACKET

A classic moto jacket can instantly add a cool factor to any look and is great for layering. Whether you go with a faux or real leather jacket or a suede jacket, either or both are great closet staples. Both of those below are great price points and come in several colors.

A WOOL COAT

I really think you need a wool coat in every neutral color, but at least one is a must. I love classic silhouettes and this is a piece that if you invest in you’ll wear for years to come! I have a winter white one (like shown above) camel, black, and am on the hunt for navy. I also love burgundy and red wool coats!

BLACK SKINNY JEANS

Whether you go with a regular or distressed pair, a good pair of black skinnies is essential. I swear I wear my black skinny jeans more than any item in my closet. I’m lucky enough to be able to wear the to work, but regardless, they go with just about anything!

HIGH WAISTED JEANS

I’m not sure why I waited so long to start loving high-waisted jeans, but now that I’ve started wearing them, I can’t stop. I love how they look with sweaters, thermals, and even basic t-shirts. Regular or distressed, no matter what style or wash you decide to go with, I’m certain you’ll love them as much as I do.

A CREWNECK CASHMERE SWEATER

A crewneck sweater in several colors is the best layering piece in the winter. On really cold days you can put a long sleeve thermal or t-shirt underneath and then add jackets over it. I think investing in a cashmere sweater is the best option, because you’ll have it for years. They aren’t always as expensive as you may think, too!

HEELED BOOTIES

I opt for block heeled booties when looking at closet staples, because they tend to be more comfortable. I think camel and black are the most classic choices, but I also love grey, white, and even a fun statement color like red.

OVER THE KNEE BOOTS

There are few things I’d rather put on when it’s freezing outside then alllll the layers. I love putting cozy socks underneath them for added warmth. I really can’t stop wearing the pair I just invested in (see more on that here), but whether you opt for the splurge or steal version, at least one pair is a must.

A COZY CARDIGAN

A cozy cardigan is a must. Whether you’re lounging at home or layering, this is one piece you’ll wear again and again. Even as it becomes a little warmer outside, a good cardigan is perfect over a dress or even with shorts.

A TURTLENECK

I love a good ole tissue-style turtleneck. You can wear this on it’s own or layer it. I like finding one good one and buying it in a few colors. The two below are some of my favorites because they are so soft, a great price point, and are both available in several colors.

CLASSIC PUMPS

Whether you’re wearing them for a date night, to work, or to a winter wedding a pair of classic pumps is a must. I love wearing pumps because I think they give any look a classic touch. The two below are both available in a ton of colors and are my two favorite pairs of affordable pumps. If you want to invest in a pair, these are my pick.

A PAIR OF MULES

While your ankles may be a little cold on a freezing day, a pair of mules is a necessity. They are so easy to slide on when running errands or for a casual day out and about, but make any look chic. This pair with a little bow on top are also an adorable option. If you want a splurge-worthy pair, these are my pick.

A PLAID COAT

I love plaid always, but particularly in the winter. I think a plaid coat is a nice way to add a little pattern into your look. I think that classic colors like black and white will always be in style, but I also love a fun red one like this.

A GO TO THERMAL

I live in thermal t-shirts in the winter. I love to lounge in them, wear them to run errands, or even dress them up for a little date night. The one on the left is the one I’ve been wearing on repeat. It comes in 10+ colors and I now own it in three. I also own the one on the right and love that it is oversized.

FAUX LEATHER LEGGINGS

I really don’t know what I’d do without these. I layer with them out and about and lounge in them constantly. The pair on the right is my absolute favorite and I think they are worth every penny. The pair on the right is more budget friendly and the reviews are really good.

FUR LINED BOOTS

For those reaaaallly cold days, nothing else will do but a pair of fur or faux fur lined boots. There are so many different styles, but the two below are classic and comfortable.

For the super cold days, be sure to check out this post for all of my winter weather essentials where I have more fur and faux fur lined boots and all the cutest winter puffer coats, scarves, and gloves. XO
